The Museum Precious Metals Cleaning Plate.
Using electrolytic action instead of traditional chemical polish abrasion, this tarnish remover bathes away tarnish from oxidized silver without removing any of the underlying metal. Simply place the 6" x 8" cleaning plate in a sink of hot water, add the activator, and immerse the tarnished metal. Tarnish dissolves and transfers to the cleaning plate, which lasts indefinitely and rinses clean under the tap. Non-toxic and harmless to precious gems, the tarnish remover cleans copper, quality brass, bronze, stainless steel, silver, and gold. Includes 1 lb. of activator; use 1 tbsp. per 1/4-cup of water. 6" W x 8" L. (3 oz.)
l find it hard to believe any museum would use this product ! Not only does it not dissolve the tarnish as easily as it claims, it also leaves a white caste over some of the silver. Even using it twice on some items didn't give good results.
For heavily tarnished items, they want you to pre-polish the item.
l actually felt it damaged some silver jewelry that l used the plate on. lt left the surfaces looking scratched, not highly polished. Use silver polish instead !
Using boiling water and the amount of activating powder prescibed, I was amazed at the speed with which the tarnish on my sterling silver cutlery disappeared. After about thirty seconds I was able to take it out of the solution. When rinsed and dried it was as clean as it ever has been. This is better than any silver cleaning solution I have ever used. I think I will have to use a silver polish to keep it bright for longer, though.
Effectively loosens Long Established Tarninsh, but, patience is required - Little effect was observed after the 30 seconds stipulated in the directions.
Vigorous elbow grease following the electrolytic bath also helps a lot!
A little awkward for larger items like candle holders and torches, but, worked fine in the bath tub.
My purpose with this product was to clean many of my silver jewelry that have over time tarnished. I have tried cream and cloth silver polish agents but I was not satisfied with the result - while it took a long time to clean, the effect did not last long. With Precious Metal Cleaning Plate, I followed the instruction which was easy and was able to remove the built up tarnish from the jewelry with ease. I also liked the idea of not scratching the surface in the process unlike other polishing products. I will change from 4 stars to 5 stars if the result lasts longer as it claims (yet to be seen).
