Great in concept only Love the idea of this chair stool. Bought it to have at a kitchen desk area so it could easily be converted as needed into a stool to reach into kitchen cabinets.Upon receiving it the first thing I noticed was a warning saying not to use the two uppermost rails to stand on - not advertised that way! What this essentially means is that as a stool, they are recommending you only stand on a step that ends up being 17" off the ground, same as a chair. Immediately, the benefit of having this was suspect. I continued to assemble it anyway, figuring I'd at least SEE whether one can use another higher step. Turns out you kind of can, but it makes it unstable and it might tip over so you'd only do this if you have the stool up against a wall or base cabinet. Part of the assembly uses Cam locks. Both cam locks bent (one broke) when trying to assemble. Had to call the manufacturer to get replacements for them and it was also missing a screw (which they replaced for me).A week later I was back at it and the new cam locks also bent so clearly this product is not manufactured quite right. After lots of fiddling I was able to get the cam locks to work correctly and continue with the assembly. The next glitch came when putting a rail at the bottom (the "safety" rail so to speak, that locks the unit together as either a stool or a chair). Turns out there was a screw HOLE missing in one of the side pieces. The company offered to replace the part but at that point so much would have to be UN assembled and I was so frustrated that I just wanted to sent the thing back. But sending it back would also require disassembly and re-packing and it just wasnt worth doing that! So I created my own screw hole to secure that final piece.Quality: there are little plastic pieces to cover up all the screw holes. Many do not fit tight and are falling out. Others are scraped up so the black finsh is coming off making the product look kind of cheap. Finally, once it finished and it is a chair, the hinges stick up above the level of the seat! For someone thin (like me) it's no big deal and I can sit between them and not feel them, but a wider person woud be sitting on the hinges and it might be uncomfortable. I suppose you could buy a cusion but then that makes it even LESS convenient to turn into a step stool doesn't it?In sum (apologies for the rant, I would not recommend this product). I would return it if it weren't such a hassle to do so. The price point is such that it's not bad enough to return and that is how I believe they can make their money on a subpar shoddy product.I feel I've wasted my time even writing up this review but hopefully I'll save someone the hassle that I went through. functional and handy Great product except the screw caps are plastic and coated with paint that chips off as soon as you apply them. They really should have been made of wood. June 29, 2011
Great Chair and Kitchen Step tool This is truly a great design, I love things like this chair that have an additional use. I bought this chair for my new kitchen that has elevated storage spaces. The chair arrived on time, in great conditions, is very simple to assemble and it looks great. Why the 4 stars instead of five. Here are some improvements I think the manufacturers should consider, first the little covers to hide the metal screws are made of cheap white plastic and are painted, because they are plastic the paint comes off really easy, from when I opened the box and for the last 5 days I already have 5 white dots on the chair, not a big problem since I plan to replace them with wooden ones. Second the cherry color seems like it has been painted instead of a natural color, I'm going to re-paint it anyway with the color of my kitchen.Overall very satisfied and happy with my purchase, just some minor adjustment I hope the manufacturers take into consideration.
