About the Artisan
Building a sisterhood through creating jewelry, the Starfish Project is addressing the issue of exploited women in a country where basic human rights are often ignored. Women in exploitive circumstances find shelter, both literal and mental, with the organization, which also provides anonymity often necessary to ensure the women's safety.
The women are taught the craft of jewelry-making and are paid a fair price for their work. The starfish glass pendant that hangs from an organza ribbon is a unusual show of brilliant color from a shy society. The designs of earrings, bracelets, and necklaces that integrate stones, freshwater pearls, crystals, and metals show a sophistication and attention to detail required by consumers in the developed world.
