Our Reversible Tansu Step Chest can be positioned so the "steps" face either left or right.
In the small dwellings of 18th century Japan, the "Kaidan Tansu" was created to provide much needed storage space as well as access to a second story or loft. Our Reversible Tansu Step Chest utilizes the same Zen characteristics of simplicity in form and utility in function to add visual interest as well unique storage to your home. This Japanese Tansu furniture design is designed so you can display it facing left or right, to fit neatly by a staircase wall.
With 3 drawers, 2 hinged door compartments and 2 sliding door compartments, the Reversible Tansu Step Chest offers a variety of ways to organize clutter, hide home electronics, or store household items. Plus, the 5 "steps" provide unique display space on top for collectibles, photos, and sculptures. The Tansu Step Chest is crafted of poplar and poplar veneers with antiqued metal drawer pulls.
Benefits of the Reversible Tansu Step Chest:
Fits in well with our open stairway, much as pictured in the ad.
Delivery was made within a week. Was pleased with that, and all pieces were accounted for with no damage.
Some pieces were mis-numbered making it a little more difficult to put together but I was able to figure
it out with some trial & error.
This an excellent product. Larger than my friends told me (which is a good thing) and very sturdy.
After laying all of the parts out it appeared rather daunting. However, it was very easy to put together even after a few glasses of wine.
I would definitely recommend this item.
This is a solid piece of furniture weighing about 100 pounds. Not particle board but real wood and superbly designed. The ad says it "partially assembled" but that's somewhat of an exaggeration. In fact, there are about 40 pieces to put together and you can plan on a good four hours of work. The sections are all numbered but not polarized so it is quite easy to attach a piece facing the wrong direction. After a while, and a few mistakes, you figure out that all the edges that are recessed face the back as that's where the rear covers are installed. So while the instructions are provided, there are just enough missing details to frustrate even a mechanically inclined person. But once you're done you have a superb piece of furniture that is as strong as it is beautiful.
if you have room going along a staircase it fits perfect. saves room and looks great. very sturdy as well
Very well received in two packages, alarmed on the first one not mentioning that it was delivery 2 of 2 !! Received 36 items, assembly notice well detailed, did make couple of mistakes and had to undo .. but overall it is a nice purchase !! Got 20% discount on labor day
I ordered this for our apartment- it is perfect for smaller spaces. Ours is the Burnt Chesnut. The product itself is very sturdy, and offers lots of storage not only inside but the steps offer a nice touch to place photo frames and plants on top. It is a beautiful piece and looks great in the corner. The only major drawback is that it took my husband and I a good three hours (!!) to assemble- it was not easy and it really is a two person job.
All prior reviews are accurate. I bought two sets and framed an arch window with them. Looks great. Four hours first assembly. Less than three for second one. The braces and screws that hold the pieces on each level in place could be more sturdy. I can see them breaking or bending if a piece is bumped with some force. I'll probably figure a way to reinforce those braces.
This chest is perfect for an area near the stairs. I also like that there are separate places to keep things organized. My husband didn't like putting it together as it took some time. The veneer came off in a couple places while he was assembling it otherwise, I would have given a five star rating.
We are very happy with our storage chest. We have a corner that this fits perfectly into and gives us the storage space we needed (we disposed (finally) of our coffee table which has been with us for 43 years but we wanted to keep the items it stored).
It came sooner than expected - in 2 days!.
Everything went together well except one door did not have the holes drilled and we had to do this ourself.
Very nice piece of furniture.
The wife had been looking for a tansu for some time - the ones she'd found were budget-busters. We're very pleased with this addition to our home. It shipped on time and arrived more than a week ahead of schedule. Assembly was straight forward but not because of the instructions. 2 1/2 hours from opening the first box to clearing up to packaging.
In a nutshell, I am very happy with this purchase!
The main material is actually not wood per se (I think one of the reviews I read claimed it is), it's a type of dense particle board. However, each piece of it has a good sense of substance to it and the veneer is very secure on all the finished surfaces; I see no seams or anything else that would give it away.
I got the burnt walnut one. The color, grain, and feel of the veneer is nice and the finished piece looks great in my home.
It came mostly unassembled and at first glance the boxes (there are 2) appeared less sturdy than I thought they'd need to be, but other than a very minor chip on one edge of one of the pieces, the contents of the shipping boxes got to me undamaged. You'll see as you open and unpack that good thought went into planning the packing.
The assembly process was pretty straightforward but I would suggest paying careful attention to the instructions. Specifically, look carefully at the diagrams of how the parts go together. Most of the parts are built symmetrically so they can be assembled for either orientation of the finished piece, but some of the parts have one surface that's tooled to face the back. The diagrams don't show that, so you have to pay attention as you work on putting it together.
As far as the assembly process is concerned, I didn't mind it. In fact I enjoyed it. The designers of the piece took everything into consideration. Screw holes are lined with plastic threaded inserts, and the basic assembly process is just repetition of a simple technique for joining one part to another.
The only drawback I can think of for this piece is the back -- it's thin, feels sort of like finished masonite, and it's lighter in color than the surfaces you see on front, top and sides. But that being said, I don't really mind it. The back installs securely, and the material they chose for it might be part of the reason why they can make the piece available at the price. And on seeing it assembled in my home, I think the price was very reasonable.
Be ready to deal with a couple of large shipping boxes with some weight to them, and be ready to devote an afternoon to assembling it. Once you've done that, you'll have a very cool piece of furniture, something with a lot of character.
(My photo is a little grainy.)
The storage unit looks nice and was not that hard to assemble but it was smaller than I thought it was going to be.
You know how most things don't live up to description and/or hype? This item absolutely DOES live up to all design and hype! Awesome item, easy to put together, took me a little over 2 hours by myself to assemble and stock...worth every minute as I enjoyed the process. The unit replaced two former dressers, saving me a ton of space and the resulting look and use of my bedroom is now complete. It's safer and all the extra steps for displaying small items is cool!
This was a great purchase. I was a little overwhelmed with the thought of putting it together, but it was remarkably easy. I love all the compartments and it takes up very little space.
Order the Tansu as I needed a unique storage container that would take up a 4 foot space and be a piece of art at the same time.
I ordered this item and it arrived quickly however, the box was somewhat damaged and I was afraid the contents were also damaged. Just a minor ding that I thought I could live with it. It requires a lot of assembly as it has many parts but it was not difficult. My only disapointment is that I ordered a color thinking it was a different color but it was my mistake - I wish there was a way to show each color offered with a photo to make sure people don't get the 2 kinds of brown mixed up.
The chest came in two large boxes. Every piece was numbered and the instructions relied on those numbers. Putting it together was somewhat tedious and time consuming. Power tools are a great help. It took my husband and me all afternoon but the results - and the price - made it worth it. Once built, it is not reversible, so be sure you know which direction you want it to go before you start. Also realize that it is not a large chest; the measurements given are correct, making it almost a "mini" step chest. It is perfect for my space.
Unfortunately, this came in two boxes that were damaged en route. However, nothing was missing. It seemed to consist of about a million parts and the idea of "building" it was daunting. After a few missteps, I was able to do it all by myself...quite a feat! The Tansu Step Chest is very helpful when you live in an apartment and I have had many compliments on it. I'm so happy that I ordered it!
I've been looking at this for a good while now, finally broke down and purchased. I am satisfied. The product is sturdy and pretty straight forward to assemble.
The chest is an awesome piece to be added to any home. I thought it would be larger than what it was but it still fits my needs and decor. The assembly was easy as well. Great buy and worth every dime.
This is beautiful at a price that can't be beat! It is not difficult to get together, just follow the directions. Real wood and screws for back cover unlike the cardboard and nails most other manufacturers use!
If it came in espresso, I would buy another ;)
I received mine last week and I just love it! It took my husband about 3 hours to put together and we placed it in our family room for storage of my many weaving yarns that were cluttering the room. Honestly, it looks like it cost much more than it did. My husband wants to order another one and make it a pyramid, which would be beautiful. Additionally, my cats LOVE sitting on the top level to get away from the dogs. :-)
I first saw a picture in the 2009 Sky Mall magazine, took it home with me and I finally order it about 2 months ago. !Delivery was quick and I was thrilled to see and feel the quality of the wood. !I love the burnt !chestnut finish, so rich looking. Once I put it together and placed in my bedroom I was knew I was right to buy it and will enjoy it for many years to come. !Thank you Stafford and Improvements. !If you have a headboards to match, please let me know. !
Well made, easy to assemble, and all the utility that I had hoped for.
I bought this as a Christmas gift for my wife after she saw it in the Skymall magazine. I got a good deal on black Friday on price and shipping and it arrived promptly. There are a lot of pieces and you have to plan 3 hours or so to just take your time, walk through the directions and have a finished product. Although it can be a bit tedious, I have had worse experiences with pieces and instructions! Overall, the piece wasn't as large as I had envisioned but the quality of the wood and pieces was better than expected. The color was also a perfect match with our dining room table and cabinet. Overall a good purchase.
Looks and functions as expected. First drawer took about a half hour to figure out; then about five minutes per drawer after that. Fun to assemble, neat looking, and practical to use.!
Item arrived missing back pieces which are essential to putting it together. Rather than taking it apart and trying to return it I bought 1/8" plywood and made our own. Shelves look great, shipping was prompt and unit packed well no damage during shipping. Manufacturers out going quality poor.
I received my Tansu chest close to three weeks ago and needless to say, I still haven't put it together. There are two big ole boxes, filled with so many pieces and knobs that I don't know where to start. So daunting. I hope I get it done by Xmas. It's March now!!
Its a quick and easy piece to put together.
My husband and I put this together and were a great team. Such great diagrams and directions. We did not fight once!! Thank you for offering this!!
I bought this piece to try and gain control of my kid's clutter that takes over my entry way each day. It fits so perfectly below my staircase, it looks custom built. We couldn't be happier!
Also, my husband and 19 year old son assembled this piece in about an hour and a half. They had no issues.
I bought this about 3 weeks ago, and waited another week to have a couple of guys help me assemble it. It was easy. The 3 of us did it all in 2 hours. [But I studied the assembly manual the day before.] Descriptions and designs were clear, and the finished product is gorgeous! It fits neatly into a corner of my study and will house all the items my old desk used to hold.
This is so beautiful and such high quality - all the doors and drawers move freely, and it's turned a catch-all space into a star!
I actually gave it as a house warming gift to my sisters - they say they love it - I only saw a picture.
I ordered the Burnt Chestnut and it was delivered in about a week with the second box arriving 3 days later. Every piece was numbered and the instructions were very clear. Putting it together was fairly easy. Just took a screwdriver. It took me a few days of putting it together after I got home from work but the results, spectacular! It is perfect for my space and now I have a spot for my kitchen aid mixer. There was some minor damage on some of the pieces but after reading the reviews I kinda expected that. Also large sliding door not moving easily, but for the price I am gladly living with it.
